action

In high school, headmaster Vagina announces the evening flu-time ball over the loudspeaker. However, since this is intended to educate people and not to celebrate the illness, he asks everyone who is actually sick to stay at home. In the corridors, Morty sees his great love Jessica talking to her friends. He summons up all his courage and asks her if she would like to be his companion at the ball. She is already showing the first signs of the flu, but before things can develop any further, a classmate named Brad slides between Morty and Jessica and explains to him that he should speak to someone who plays in his league. Jessica is relieved by Brad's intervention and walks away without talking to Morty.

At home in the evenings, Morty is still upset and his father tries to cheer him up by telling him a story about himself and Morty's mother. But Rick bursts in, takes the floor and clarifies what Jerry's real motives were for the marriage with Beth, after which Jerry had a child with Beth, so that she has a reason to marry him. Rick advises his grandson not to take any tips from his father as his marriage is about to end. Morty asks Rick not to be so disparaging of his parents, but Rick explains that falling in love is just the human reaction to animal reproduction and that he should just love science instead. When asked about it, he visits his grandfather in the garage, who is tinkering with a device. Morty asks Rick if he could invent some kind of love potion that would trigger a chemical reaction in Jessica that made Jessica fall in love with him. Rick says that this is beneath his dignity and instead asks him several times to hand him a screwdriver. Morty reacts irritably and says he won't give him the screwdriver and instead demands the potion from his grandfather as a reward for the many times he has supported Rick. Rick digs out a test tube full of oxytocin from a box, which he extracted from a vole, which, as he explains to his grandson, form lifelong bonds. He combines this with a hair from Morty. Satisfied, Morty goes to the ball after asking his grandfather about possible dangers. The latter calms him down, but after Morty has left the garage he says that there is only a risk of flu.

Meanwhile, Jerry, insecure, asks Beth if she still loves him. Beth, absorbed in work, reacts emotionless and discouraging by trying to make him understand in a kind of parable about building homeless shelters that loving Jerry means hard work. Shortly afterwards, she receives a text message that her help is needed in the veterinary clinic. She mentions that she will be alone with her colleague Davin. Jerry soon becomes jealous.

Meanwhile, a large number of students have already gathered in the school's gym for the flu season ball. Morty sees Jessica with a happy look, takes some of the serum and rubs it unabashedly on Jessica's arm. She is just about to reprimand him when the serum shows its effect and she falls in love with him. Just like on school, Brad crosses their path again and plans to give Morty another lecture. Jessica hits him and sneezes in his face, whereupon he also falls for Morty. There is an argument with Jessica over Morty's favor. Brad is then brought outside by the headmaster and Mr. Goldenfold, but also sneezes, which means that the punch and then the entire gym are exposed to the serum via the ventilation shafts, and everyone present has their eye on Morty. Even the committed rapper on stage quickly rewrote his lyrics.

At the Smiths' house, Jerry is still brooding over Beth and Davin, annoying his daughter Summer, who tries to make it clear to him that a horse operation will not be very romantic. Again it is Rick who, with his comment, gets Jerry to drive to the clinic. Alone with his granddaughter, Rick asks her why she isn't also at the ball. She mentions that she doesn't want to catch the flu, whereupon Rick realizes that Morty urgently needs his help.

At the ball, everyone present is fighting hard about Morty, who can escape with difficulty and flees from school with his grandfather who has just arrived. They get into Rick's spaceship who thinks he has a suitable antidote at hand, this time with praying mantis extract, which are known for beheading their male counterparts after mating. Rick says that they are the exact opposite of voles and that the extracts neutralize each other. He sprays the serum over the greedy crowd below, but actually turns those present into humanoid praying mantises. He casually mentioned that these serums would not work on anyone with a genetic relationship. When he sees the chaos on the ground, he says that science is sometimes more art than science.

Meanwhile, Jerry drives to the vet's office in a rage when he approaches the end of a traffic jam. The praying mantises have already wreaked havoc on their search for Morty. Jerry runs away from some of them. With the shotgun of a deceased policeman he succeeds in killing some of the beasts. Meanwhile, Summer learns of the disaster through a breaking news story on television, and the news presenters have already changed. When switching, it becomes clear that the epidemic has already spread to large parts of the world. Some of the beasts then invade the Smith home, whereupon Summer takes flight.

In space, where Rick and Morty ended up, Rick has meanwhile developed another serum, which is made up of koala, rattlesnake, chimpanzee, cactus, shark, golden retriever and some dinosaurs, and according to Rick, adds up to normal humanity.

Meanwhile, Beth and Davin have successfully saved the lives of several horses and the latter is actually in the process of messing with Beth. However, she does not respond and it quickly becomes clear that the advances were not aimed at her, but also for Morty, since Davin is also infected. He asks Beth to get inappropriate details about Morty before transforming himself. Shortly afterwards, Jerry arrives at the practice armed with a crowbar, clearly marked by the chaos in front of the door, and knocks Davin down. Beth thanks him for his intervention.

Rick and Morty fly over town and after a brief debate, Morty pulls the lever that releases the new serum. At first everything seems to be back to normal. The beasts have turned back into completely normal people and Rick makes Morty his superiority if this success is evident. However, it quickly becomes clear that everything is far from being good. People squirm in pain on the street before turning into slimy monsters of all shapes and sizes. Shortly afterwards, Jerry and Beth approach the scene and kill some of the monsters armed with shotgun and machete. Immediately afterwards, Summer runs into her after her escape. Rick, who gives the monsters the name Cronenbergs (after David Cronenberg ), and Morty watch the scenario from the rooftops. They get into an argument about which of the two is responsible for the chaos. Morty asks Rick to undo everything. Rick thinks he still has an ace up his sleeve, after which everyone should be restored to normal. He asks Morty to put on some kind of backpack. A short time later, the two landed in front of the Smiths' house, all buildings are whole again and the newspapers report that the epidemic was averted. Morty is amazed at his grandfather's temporary solution and this time, after entering the garage, he is ready to hand his grandfather a screwdriver. He turns the screws on the device a few times before it explodes and kills both of them. It quickly becomes clear that this is not Rick and Morty, as they have been shown so far, but only Rick and Morty from another reality. Rick and Morty reach the garage through a portal and Morty immediately panics when he sees the corpses. Rick explains that in some of the infinite realities he has managed to avert the epidemic. He still had to find a reality, however, in which Rick and Morty would die at that precise time, so that they could take their place in a reality without global catastrophe. Rick also makes it clear that if Morty had given him the screwdriver immediately, they would actually be dead now. They bury the bodies in the Smiths' garden, and Morty is traumatized by the event. When they are back in the house, Morty realizes that in return for the Cronenberg world, his parents still have marital problems in this reality. He sits down, deep in himself, next to Rick and Summer on the sofa.

After the credits you can see how the Smith family lives in the Cronenberg world, which has since turned into a post-apocalyptic world. Summer entertains her parents with a performance from Jaws . Jerry asks Beth if she thinks of Rick and Morty from time to time. She affirms this with some shame, because she thinks she is finally happy now. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty have an adventure as Cronenbergs.

criticism

Joe Matar, from Den of Geek, liked the episode. He said it wasn't as funny as the last one, but it had a beautifully dark ending, and he also enjoyed Jerry's action hero subplot.

useful information

  • This episode uses the name of one of the two main characters in the original title for the first time. In later episodes, especially from season 2 onwards, the original episode titles are often based on puns based on the names "Rick" and "Morty".
  • The episode title is a reference to the film Love Potion No. 9 - The scent of love .
  • The Cronenbergs are a nod to Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg , who is known for his horror and body films.
  • Summer is in the final scene, a performance of the speech by Quint, though not entirely accurate, from the movie Jaws for the best.
