action

When visiting an old fortune teller, the young biochemist Paul Matthews is told on the head that he has no luck with women. A tincture called Love Potion No. 8, is supposed to remedy the situation: if he drinks it diluted, every woman who hears his voice will fall for him. Paul doesn't believe it, at home he throws the fortune teller's sample in the trash. However, after his cat nibbles on it and attracts all the tomcats in the neighborhood, Paul changes his mind.

Together with behavioral scientist Diane Farrow, he does some experiments, the effect is confirmed. The two decide to try the tincture on themselves. Although Paul is secretly in love with Diane, they agree not to try the effects on each other, but only on others. While the ugly duckling Diane, inspired by the effect she soon has on attractive men, develops into a radiant swan, the uptight Paul sets out on a journey of discovery into the joys of sex and loosens up. After trying things out for a while, and above all with newly found self-confidence, the two finally find each other as a couple, without any magical tutoring.

Diane's earlier on-and-off relationship, Gary, who previously only used her as a sex playmate, throws the two of them off the hook. Equipped with the tincture, he snatches the now very desirable Diane away from Paul and isolates her from him. Since Diane doesn't let Gary get anything under the influence of magic, Paul has no choice but to ask the fortune teller for advice again. This gives him another potion, this time the one with the number 9. Drunk by two former lovers, it revives the former love forever - however: if one of the two has not loved, it condemns the lover to eternally unrequited devotion.

Time is of the essence: When Paul devises a plan to give Diane the potion, it turns out that her wedding to Gary is imminent. After some tumultuous entanglements, including the dissolution of the wedding party and a wild hunt of hundreds of enchanted men through town, in the end it is actually as the fortune teller explained to Paul: After he found Love Potion No. 9 drank from the same glass, then kissed her and waited five (or at least six) minutes, the love of the two revived and they come together again.
