Rick Sternbach
Rick Sternbach (born July 6, 1951 in Bridgeport , Connecticut , USA ) is an American illustrator .
Star Trek
Sternbach has been considered the visual father of numerous extraterrestrial worlds on Star Trek since he first worked on Star Trek: The Film in 1979 . Sternbach, like his colleague Andrew Probert , used matte painting in their work to create futuristic backgrounds; he and Probert also made miniature structures to represent starbases.
He also served as a technical consultant for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager from 1993 .
Other work
In 1980, Sternbach was Head of Visual Effects at Unser Kosmos , a 13-episode documentary series. In 1981 he pioneered the founding of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (1982). He was also responsible for the graphics for Steven Soderbergh's Solaris from 2002.
Award
Rick Sternbach was awarded an Emmy in 1981 for his work on Cosmos .
