Ricky L. Polston (born November 24, 1955 in Dothan , Alabama ) is an American lawyer who has served as a judge at the Supreme Court of Florida since 2008 . Between 2012 and 2014 he was its Chief Justice (Supreme Judge).

Career

Polston was born in Alabama and grew up in Graceville , Florida. He first received an associate degree from Chipola College in Marianna , then studied law at Florida State University . He completed this in 1986.

Polston worked as a chartered accountant from 1977 to 1984. Polston later practiced as a lawyer from 1987 to 2000. Governor Jeb Bush appointed him January 2, 2001, as a judge on the Florida First District Court of Appeals, where he served until his appointment to the Florida Supreme Court.

Governor Charlie Crist appointed Polston to the Supreme Court of Florida on October 1, 2008, to succeed Judge Kenneth B. Bell , who returned to practice. In 2010 and 2016, Polston was re-elected to his position. As of July 1, 2012, he served as the presiding judge of this court after he was unanimously elected by his colleagues to succeed Charles T. Canady for the two-year term of office .

Since 2003 Polston has also worked as an associate professor at Florida State University College of Law, where he taught the Florida Constitutional Law course for several years.

Private

Polston is married to the children's author Deborah Ehler Polston and has ten children with her, six of whom are adopted.
