The Riedsee near Leeheim is part of the Riedsee recreation area of the city of Riedstadt and is located on the L3096 between Leeheim and Geinsheim, surrounded by farmland. The shore zone is flat, for swimming you can reach the water via the designated bathing beach.
Origin and location
The Riedsee near Leeheim was created as a result of gravel mining. Its clear water occupies an area of almost 24 hectares. The lake is considered to be one of the cleanest lakes in Hessen.
The local recreation area "Riedsee" actually consists of two lakes; both arose from gravel mining. The South Sea is not accessible to the public, the North Sea can in turn be divided into a western part - which is used as a fishing area - and an eastern part - which is designated as a bathing area.
The deepest point in the bathing area is approx. 22 m; the deepest point in the South Pacific is around 38 m in the angling area.
Directions and accessibility
There is a large car park with approx. 800 parking spaces directly on the lake, as well as an additional parking space with another 800 spaces for bathers. On hot days, parking is controlled and monitored by a security service, who also collects the parking fees. On days when the number of visitors is particularly high, the car park may be closed due to overcrowding; however, this will be announced via local radio stations.
There is no bus stop at the Riedsee itself - the next stop is "Geinsheimer Straße" at the end of Leeheim in the direction of Geinsheim and is about 15-20 minutes' walk from the lake. It is served by bus routes 40, 41 and 46.
The Riedsee in summer
to bathe
In addition to the spacious and well-tended beach area, the Riedsee offers its visitors sufficient changing rooms and sanitary facilities.
During the bathing season, two bathing islands are anchored in the lake at different distances from the shore area. For beginners, there is a designated bathing area in the immediate vicinity of the municipal lifeguard tower. However, there is parental supervision there.
Supervision and water rescue service
During the opening hours in the bathing season, the lake is guarded by trained lifeguards from Riedsee GmbH. You have your own lifeboat at your disposal.
On weekends and on public holidays, the pool supervision is supported by the voluntary helpers of the DLRG local group Riedstadt-Leeheim eV (DLRG OG Leeheim). The guards have a rescue station with a medical room , several motorized lifeboats and diving equipment at their disposal for the water rescue service . The DLRG OG Leeheim also has its own sunbathing area available to carry out its activities.
opening hours
The opening times of the Riedsee are in the bathing season, which lasts from April 1st to September 30th, from Monday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The admission closes at 7 p.m., the bathing closes at 7:30 p.m.
further activities
Several beach volleyball fields, table tennis tables and playgrounds are available to visitors on the beach and on the lawn.
The lake can be used with rubber dinghies; however, the use of hard-shell boats is prohibited. Surfing, fishing and diving are also prohibited for bathers. Surfing and fishing is only allowed through the local clubs and in a specially designated area of the lake. Diving is only permitted to members of the DLRG OG Leeheim.
There are also two designated barbecue areas where barbecues that you have brought with you may be grilled (only registered campers have a barbecue permit). Outside the designated barbecue areas (e.g. on the lawn), barbecuing is prohibited due to the risk of fire.
The Riedsee as a local recreation area
Camping at the Riedsee
As a designated local recreation area, the Riedsee not only offers relaxation opportunities in summer in its function as one of the largest bathing lakes in the region; in winter the lake is freely accessible for walkers. In recent years the lake has frozen over again and again in winter, so that there has been the possibility of ice skating.
There are permanent camping plots - in summer there is the possibility of short-term camping (mainly with tents and not with caravans).
Wutzdog Festival
Since 2006, the so-called "Wutzdog Festival" has taken place every year in August on an open-air site right next to the Riedsee . Usually smaller bands from the region of different styles (rock, alternative, metal, pop) play for a diverse audience. Admission is free.
The net proceeds of the festival from sponsorship money and sales will be donated to non-profit cultural and / or social organizations.
The 'Wutzdog Festival' is organized by the Wutzdog eV Riedstadt. All bands, helpers and organizers work free of charge.
