Riemer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Riemer is a former profession in the leather processing industry . In the Middle Ages, the Riemer group was a craft . Masters were referred to as Riemermeister or Riemenmeister .

The Riemer made belts and straps from leather, water buckets for fire fighting, harnesses for the draft animals and - as the name suggests - straps of all kinds, for example for shoes, drums and flails .

The Riemer is to be distinguished from the shoemaker / shoemaker , saddler and bag maker . In contrast to the shoemaker, saddler and fine bag maker, he is no longer listed in the list of crafts (appendix to the Crafts Code HandwO ).

The occupation was sometimes practiced as a double occupation with that of the saddler. So was about Immanuel Kant's father Johann Georg Kant saddlery and Riemer champion. The full-time belts, whose product was more likely to be made from leftover leather, were among the poorer craftsmen. In a letter to Baroness Henriette von Pereira (dated March 26, 1813) , Theodor Körner impressively describes the situation of a belt master. “ I'm staying with Schindler's belt master in the beautiful town of Zobten. The righteous man's whole apartment consists of a small room. How we finish the day and have space would be too difficult to describe; but let us draw a night piece. At the top of the window is the master, next to him on two chairs his fourth heir. The mistress of the mistress, who rocks the cradle with the fifth heir to the side, comes up against his bed. Then comes the door; then the poet lies on a litter between that badly locked door and a glowing stove. At his head, in what is known as hell, the third heir, next to this at right angles the two oldest children, No. 1 and 2, in a large shed; the journeyman closes the procession, also on a litter, with his feet at the second window, so that a snoring horseshoe is formed by those who are slumbering. «
