The giant bark beetle ( Dendroctonus micans ) is a European bark beetle that occurs mainly on spruce trees ( Picea ). It is a typical secondary pest and the largest bark beetle species native to Central Europe.

description

The adult beetles are 5.5 to 9 millimeters long. The cylindrical body is glossy black-brown to black in color and has yellowish hair. The small, recessed, pronotum is constricted at the front and wider than it is long. The antennae flagella are 5-parted and the 3-parted lobes are clearly flattened.

The distribution area of ​​the giant bast beetle extends from northern, central and eastern Europe via Siberia to Japan.

Way of life

The species mainly attacks spruce species ( Picea ). It also affects the silver fir ( Abies alba ), the European larch ( Larix decidua ), the mountain pine ( Pinus mugo ) and the Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) less often .

Annual generations are formed and, under cool conditions, even multi-year generations. The species is able to hibernate in all stages of development. Adult beetles fly from the end of April to the beginning of September, with no pronounced swarming times.
