The Rifugio Gabriele Boccalatte e Mario Piolti (often also called Rifugio Boccalatte for short) is a refuge in the Aosta Valley in the Graian Alps within the Mont-Blanc group . It is located at an altitude of 2803  m in the Val Ferret side valley near the Ghiacciao di Planpincieux and Ghiacciaio delle Grandes Jorasses glaciers within the municipality of Courmayeur . The hut has been open again since 2016 and offers sleeping places for 25 mountaineers.

Ascent

From Courmayeur, drive towards the Val Ferret side valley. There is a parking lot at the Plampincieux district (1578 m).

The entire route from the parking lot at Plampincieux to the Rifugio Boccalatte, which is quite difficult, takes about 4 hours.

history

The refuge was inaugurated in 1881 and thoroughly renovated in 1944 and 1984. In 2001 the hut received some solar panels.

The hut is dedicated to the Turin mountaineers Gabriele Boccalatte and Mario Piolti, who died in an accident on Mount Aiguille de Triolet in 1938 . Previously the hut was called Rifugio Grandes Jorasses .

  • Punta Walker (4208 m), as well as the entire massif of the Grandes Jorasses Pointe Whymper (4184 m), Pointe Croz (4110 m), Pointe Elena (4045 m) and Pointe Margherita (4065 m).
