The Rigel Skerries are a chain of small islands and skerries in the north-western part of the Øygarden archipelago off the coast of the East Antarctic Kemplands . They are located in the southern section of the entrance to Edward VIII Bay .
Norwegian cartographers recorded it using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 . The first landing was made in 1954 by the team around the Australian geodesist Robert George Dovers (1921-1981) as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions . The Australian Nature Conservation Agency named it after the star Rigel , which served as a benchmark for surveying work in the area.
