Øygarden is a group of rocky and irregularly shaped islands that extend over a length of about 17.5 km in an east-west direction in the southern section of the entrance to Edward VIII Bay off the coast of the Antarctic Kemplands . They include Alphard Island , Borgøy , Depot Island , Håkollen , Karm , Rigel Skerries , Shaula Island and the Sirius Islands .

The archipelago was discovered by the crew of the research vessel RRS William Scoresby in February 1936 as part of the British Discovery Investigations and believed to be part of the Antarctic continent. Aerial photographs, which were used by Norwegian cartographers to map the archipelago in 1946, were taken during the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . Its Norwegian name suggests a chain of islands that protect the mainland coast like a fence or gate. The Australian geologist Peter Crohn (1925-2015) made the first shore leave on the islands in 1956 as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions .
