Calippus is a relatively small impact crater in the northern hemisphere of the Earth's moon . It lies in the eastern foothills of the rugged Montes Caucasus mountain range . In the northeast the remains of the crater Alexander can be seen , in the southeast it borders on the shore of the Mare Serenitatis . Between the rim of the crater and the rim of the lunar sea , a step called Rima Calippus runs in an arc in a northeasterly direction with a length of 40 kilometers .

The outer edge of Calippus is irregularly shaped and has bulges in the northeast. The same applies to the west side, where there is also a terrace made of slipped rubble on the inside. The perimeter of the crater is surrounded by a gentle wall, which borders the rugged terrain of the mountain range. The crater floor within the sharp-edged inner walls is rough and irregular.
