Alphonsus is a lunar crater with a diameter of 117 km on the eastern edge of the Mare Nubium , immediately south of the crater Ptolemaeus . It is named after King Alfonso X of Castile.
The walls of the crater rise up to 3 km above the crater floor. A ridge running in north-south direction, 15 km wide and one km high in the center divides the crater floor. A system of lunar grooves , the Rimae Alphonsus, runs on the largely flat crater floor .
The astronomer Nikolai Alexandrowitsch Kosyrew discovered the transient moon phenomenon in Alphonsus in 1958 , a reddish veil, the cause of which is probably due to the molecular carbon emerging from the lunar rock and the UV radiation of the sun .
In 1965, the Ranger 9 space probe hit the crater at the end of its mission.
