Homer and Bart plan to have two torn bean bags filled in Shelbyville . On the way back they see Martin Prince riding a tractor. When Bart asks him why he is allowed to drive a tractor, Martin replies that he is a member of the 4-H organization . Bart shows interest and then joins the organization. There is a competition there in which children have to raise a cow for a whole summer. Bart gets the weakest calf of them all and doesn't know what to do with it.

But a girl named Mary encourages him not to give up. Bart calls his animal Lou and trains it. Lou grows up to be a strong cow and becomes the strongest of them all, so it wins the competition. Bart is proud until he learns that his animal is about to be slaughtered. He tries to convince his parents to buy his bull. However, they refuse to accept him because the costs are far too high. That night, Bart, Lisa and a few animal rights activists break into the slaughterhouse to save Lou. They use a forklift to get it out. Bart wonders where to take his cop and remembers Mary. Since she is also a 4-H member and also lives on a farm, it is the ideal place for Lou.

When Bart asks Mary and her father Cletus if they can take him in, Cletus shouts that his daughter has received a marriage proposal. Bart is confused and asks what that means. Cletus explains to him that if a child is offered a cow, it is a marriage proposal in his family. On the day of the wedding, however, Bart's mother Marge steps in and says he is still too young for that. Lou should therefore be handed in, but in reality Homer is in a cow costume and is driven to the slaughterhouse instead of Lou. Lou is flown on a plane to India , where cattle are sacred and not allowed to be slaughtered, while Homer can be rescued from the slaughterhouse at the last minute.
