The marigold bream ( Diplodus anularis ), also known as the small silver sea bream , is a fish from the sea bream family that is native to the Mediterranean Sea .

description

The marigold bream has a tall and laterally strongly flattened body, which is covered with large scales. The head is relatively small, the eyes are large. The dorsal fin is covered with pointed spiked rays and elongated, the pectoral fins are long and pointed and the caudal fin is forked. The mouth of the sea bream is pointed and terminal and covered with small teeth. The body of the marigold bream is shiny silver with a slight purple sheen and has a distinctive black spot on the base of the tail. The maximum size of the sea bream is 21 centimeters, the average about 10-12 centimeters.

Way of life

The marigold bream lives in small groups near the coast. It can be found over soft soils, sandy soils, seagrass meadows and over rocks. The fish are very shy and cautious and usually keep their distance from divers and boats.

The marigold bream feeds mainly on small crustaceans such as prawns, crabs, crabs and copepods, but mussels, snails, annelid worms, fish spawn and small fish are also eaten.

distribution

The marigold bream lives all over the Mediterranean, where it is one of the dominant species of the coastal zone. It is also common in the Black Sea and on the Portuguese and Moroccan Atlantic coasts.

Fishing and exploitation

The marigold bream is not considered endangered because it is hardly used by industrial fishing due to its small size and shy behavior. It is caught as bycatch and used for fish soups and fried fish dishes. The meat is white and soft and, like that of all species of the Diplodus genus, very tasty and fine.

The marigold bream is caught close to the coast with small animal bait. Since the fish are very shy, the assemblies must be accordingly fine.
