Ringsjön is a lake in the Swedish province of Skåne län and the second largest lake in Skåne .

geography

It is divided into the sections Västra Ringsjön , Östra Ringsjön and Sätoftasjön , whereby the last two parts are sometimes added together. The lake extends over the municipalities of Eslöv , Höör and Hörby . The catchment area of the lake is about 395 km². There is a north-western outflow in the Rönne å River , which flows into Skälderviken Bay in Ängelholm Municipality .

The water level of the lake is regulated and is 53.5  m above sea level. The greatest depth is 17 meters.

history

In 1883 the owner of the Rönnesholm estate decided to drain the area. This lowered the water level by 1.5 meters and gained arable land and peat land . At the same time, the area of the lake decreased by 30% and the amount of water by 20%. It was only at this time that the clear division into a western and an eastern section emerged. The church in the small village of Munkarp, which was previously on the shore, is now several kilometers from the lake.

The intensive agriculture that followed led to over-fertilization of the water, which reduced the lake's fish population. Before the Bolment Tunnel was built, the lake was an important source of drinking water for the greater Helsingborg area . Today drinking water for the surrounding area is still obtained here. The lake still has the status of a reserve reservoir for western Skåne.

The Lillö peninsula (an island before the water level fell) consists of the remains of a volcano and is also known for its nature reserve with considerable aspens . The remains of the Bosjökloster , which is believed to have been founded before the 12th century, lie on an earlier island .
