The Rio Grande, also Ribeira dos Palheiros, is a small seasonal river about 25 kilometers in length that flows through the Portuguese concelho Lourinhã . It rises at Bombarral north of Moita dos Ferreiros and flows into the Atlantic at and at Praia da Areia Branca .

The river is very heavily polluted. There have already been numerous demonstrations against the contamination . Despite annual political campaigns and promises to take care of the cleaning, nothing significant has happened so far. Although in principle all wastewater in the area is directed to a sewage treatment plant, large parts of the remains from cattle breeding and industrial wastewater continue to flow into the river, which makes cleaning up more and more difficult.

The Lourinhã County, in partnership with the Águas do Oeste company, is making another attempt to decontaminate the Rio Grande.
