Risto Kiiskilä (6th Dan, Shōtōkan ) (born May 4, 1947 in Lahti / Finland ) is a German business economist and karateka of Finnish origin.

Life

After his military service, Kiiskilä came to Germany as an officer in the Finnish Jäger Battalion on a study exchange. As a schoolboy and soldier, he was active in cross-country skiing and swimming as well as military three-way combat (swimming, shooting, running). He then turned to karate. Kiiskilä studied business administration in Frankfurt and worked part-time in the import department of a trading company before making karate his main profession. He was under Hideo Ochi for 7 years in the German national team, was German champion 1977–1979 and was two-time runner-up in the team championship from 1975–1977. He still trains and coaches top athletes. Kiiskilä combines cultural and sporting aspects in his courses. He takes a rather critical view of the current focus of the kata on small and agile athletes; the kata should help prepare for the kumite .

In 1985, the trainer (nicknamed Mr. Hip ) , who was considered formally strict, founded his own karate school in Frankfurt am Main. As a German-speaking Finn, he was already working as a trainer and examiner for the German Judo Association of the GDR before 1989 and helped to develop the Shotokan Karate style there after the fall of the Wall in the former GDR. He has appeared several times as a mentor for new associations in Finland (including Lahti) and in (West) Germany. He has specialized in introducing children to his martial arts and has accompanied students in Dresden, Kamenz Görlitz and Berlin, among others, until they graduate as a trainer. He was also the national coach of Berlin (West) from 1984 to 1989.

Kiiskilä is married and has one son.
