Brand name on the side

Riva is an Italian motor boat manufacturer. Riva boats are considered to be of high quality and from the 1950s onwards were a symbol of upscale luxury and extravagant joie de vivre. The runabouts are therefore also known as the Rolls-Royce of the sea.

The shipyard was founded in 1842 by Pietro Riva in Sarnico on Lake Iseo and continued by his son Ernesto Riva. His son Serafino Riva mainly built racing boats to order. He thus won z. B. 1931 and 1932 the long distance race Pavia-Venezia . In addition, various world records were set with his boats in the 1930s. Serafino's eldest son Carlo Riva took over the shipyard in 1949 at the age of 27 and designed and built his boats based on the open American Chris Craft motor boats.

In classic Riva boats, the elegant hull is made of wood with seamless, deep red mahogany planking . A powerful inboard motor with a piercing low noise propels the boats. Lots of chrome, a panoramic window , a classic dashboard with a white steering wheel, white leather armchairs and a padded reclining surface behind them, as well as a slender rear end are classic design features. The list of riva owners reads like a who's who of the jet set scene from the 1950s to 1970s: Brigitte Bardot , Sean Connery , Sophia Loren , Richard Burton , Gunter Sachs .

It is estimated that around 4,000 riva boats were built and that around half still exist today. Well-maintained boats are traded like high-quality vintage automobiles at prices well over 100,000 euros.

Since 2000, Riva has been a subsidiary of the Italian yacht builder Ferretti , which under this name offers a range of high-quality sporty motorboats of various sizes and modern designs - but no longer made of wood.
