The River Clare ( Irish : Abhainn an Chláir ) is an approximately 85 km long river in the west of the Republic of Ireland .
The River Clare rises in Ballyhaunis in the east of County Mayo and flows from there for most of its course through County Galway : first in a southerly direction , from the height of Claregalway , which lies on its bank, already in a westerly direction to the Lough Corrib . From there it flows over the River Corrib into Galway Bay .
Part of the River Clare is a former turlough (karst lake).
