River Raid is a video game released worldwide by the game manufacturer Activision from 1982 . In Germany, the game gained particular popularity mainly because of its indexing as a game that glorifies violence. The game was programmed by Carol Shaw , who had also previously worked for Atari . River Raid was initially released for the Atari 2600 game console ; some time later, ports to several other console and home computer models of the time appeared.
Game action
The player controls a plane over a river in a top view and tries to achieve the highest possible score by shooting down enemy missiles and ships. Fuel that has been used by flying over refueling points must be refilled. Collisions with opponents or the river bank lead to the immediate loss of one's own aircraft. If all available aircraft are lost, the game is over.
Indexing in Germany
In the justification for the indexing decision of the BPjS of December 19, 1984 it said among other things: “Young people should think themselves into the role of an uncompromising fighter and destroyer [...]. Paramilitary training takes place here in childhood [...]. In older adolescents, the example [...] leads to physical tension, anger, aggressiveness, agility in thinking [...] and headaches. "
Further information
In 1988 a second part was published: River Raid II , which was programmed by David Lubar . The successor was more difficult to play with a similar game idea and offered the player different background landscapes. It's not as well known today as the original game, probably because it was released at a time when the Atari 2600 game console was no longer as successful on the market. The game was never ported to any other platform.
Activision published the Activision Anthology in 2002, a compilation of classic video games for the PlayStation 2 . Due to the still effective indexing of the game River Raid , the Anthology would also have come under this rule. The game was only removed from the index at the request of the manufacturer, and the game collection has now been classified by the USK as "released without age restriction".
