occupation

Riverbanks (original title: Greek Όχθες , Ochthes ) is a Greek film by Panos Karkanevatos from 2015. The cinema release in Germany was on November 19, 2015.

action

Chrysa earns her living as a smuggler on the Evros river , which marks the border between Greece and Turkey. Above all, it brings children across the river at risk of death, because not far from the river is a minefield from the time of the Cyprus conflict. It happens again and again that refugees step on mines at night and perish, others drown or freeze to death. The luggage serves as a hiding place for drugs that are supposed to be smuggled across the border.

Chrysa is plagued with guilt about what she does, but needs the money to support her family, and the gang is headed by the ruthless Ivo, who is also the father of Chrysa's child. When the Greek soldier Giannis, who voluntarily clears the minefields, observes Chrysa with the refugees one night, he tries to contact her and falls in love with her. One day they dare to flee together with the hope of a better future. However, they are followed by Ivo's gang.

criticism

The film service judges that the “quiet, unsentimental drama spreads the complex situation of all those involved with documentary precision”. In doing so, it hits "without assigning blame and simple solutions [...] exactly the right tone to raise awareness of the victims of the refugee crisis".

Awards

The film was shown at the Hamburg Film Festival in October 2015 , where it received nominations for the “Art Cinema Award” and the “Hamburg Producer Award for European Cinema Coproductions”.
