The Riwwelmatthes (also: Riwwel Matthes and Prinz-Emil-Veteranen-Denkmal) is a veteran memorial in Darmstadt .
History and description
The Riwwelmatthes is a veteran monument by Johann Baptist Scholl . The memorial originally stood on Marienplatz in Darmstadt. In 1902 the memorial was moved to the Herrngarten.
The veterans memorial was carved out of red and yellow sandstone in neo-Gothic style . The three-part structure stands on the grave chamber, which has shrunk to a base . In the middle of the monument stands the figure of a bearded and helmeted Germanic with a short sword . The shape corresponded to the symbol of the freedom struggles of the Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815).
The veterans memorial was inaugurated in 1852 by the Prince Emil Veterans Association .
