Rizal Park in Manila

The Rizal Park ( Tagalog Liwasang Rizal , Spanish Parque Rizal ) is located in the heart of the capital of the Philippines, Manila . It is also known by the names Luneta and Bagumbayan . The park is located south of the city fortress Intramuros at the north end of Roxas Boulevard and extends from Manila Bay to Taft Avenue. It is the largest park in Manila, has great historical significance for the young nation of the Philippines and is a main attraction for locals and tourists looking for relaxation.

History of the park

In the Middle Ages, the Tagalog settlement Bagumbayan, which means New City in Tagalog, was located on the grounds of the park and was a barrio of Manila until 1762 . During the British invasion of the Philippines , the barrio was completely destroyed in the Battle of Manila. The barrio was only partially rebuilt and is now integrated into the Ermita district . From 1820, the Spanish authorities had the swampy ground drained and the Paseo de Luneta built. A promenade was created that was approx. 300 meters long and 100 meters wide. At its eastern end was a place where the Spanish authorities executed Filipino resistance fighters and patriots. 158 executions were carried out between 1823 and 1897. Among the most famous are the executions of the priests Mariano Gómez , Jose Burgos , Jacinto Zamora , who went down in the history of the Philippines as GOMBURZA on February 17, 1872, and the execution of the national hero and poet José Rizal on December 30, 1896. On this Place today is the Rizal Monument, which is a national memorial.

In 1902, today's park was designed by the American city planner Daniel Burnham. On December 30, 1913, 17 years after Rizal's death, the park was officially inaugurated and named after Jose Rizal. Since then, the Filipino declaration of independence on July 4, 1946 and the end of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986 as a result of the EDSA revolution by Corazon Aquino have been proclaimed in front of the Rizal Monument.
