Rjukanfossen is a 104 m high waterfall in the western part of the municipality of Tinn in the north of the province of Vestfold og Telemark ( Norway ). The waterfall is part of the Måna river system. The waterfall used to be a major tourist attraction as one of the first floodlit waterfalls. This was powered by the energy generated by the waterfall. In 1905, Norsk Hydro's energy was used to produce saltpetre .

Surname

The name comes from the old Norse language Rjúkandi and is derived from the verb rjúka "smoking" (referring to the foam from the waterfall). The second part fossen comes from the Norwegian word foss for "waterfall" and was added later.
