The Rossdorfer or Roßdorfer Altkanal ( RAK ) is a waterway in eastern Saxony-Anhalt .
description
The Altkanal is part of the former Plauer Canal , built between 1743 and 1745 . The canal initially had a width of 10 to 15 meters, a depth of 1.10 meters to 1.25 meters, so that it can be used by ships with a length of 36.10 meters, a width of up to 4.00 meters and a draft of up to 0 , 90 meters could be driven. The carrying capacity of these ships was around 50 tons. A first, 1883 to 1891 a second expansion of the Plauer Canal took place between 1862 and 1866. According to the latter, the canal width was 26.00 meters and the depth was 2.00 meters. This enabled the Plauer Canal to be navigated with maximum ship sizes of 65.00 meters in length, 8.00 meters in width and 1.60 meters in draft. These had a load capacity of around 600 tons. Between 1926 and 1938, the Plauer Canal and the Ihle Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal over long stretches . During these extensions and renovations, however, a new course was chosen in some areas, so that several old canals were created.
The Rossdorfer Altkanal is a federal waterway and a secondary waterway. It branches off from the Elbe-Havel Canal in the urban area of Genthins and joins it again after more than 6.7 kilometers east of Genthin. The RAK is in the area of responsibility of the Genthin suburb of the Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office .
Most of the passage is only permitted for sport and recreational boating. The commercial shipping may use the channel only up to a dock still in the urban area Genthins. The canal is spanned by three bridges. In Genthin, a railway bridge spans the canal. At kilometer 3.453, the Roßdorfer bridge crosses state road 34, at kilometer 5.238 the Dunkelforther bridge crosses federal road 1 . The passage height in the canal is structurally limited to 3.30 meters and the draft to 1.30 meters.
