Life

Roar Hauglid was born as the son of the teacher Kristian Hauglid (1864-1927) and Hedvig Hansen (1871-1946). His brother, nine years older than him, was the glass painter Borgar Hauglid. Roar Hauglid completed the examen artium at the Cathedral School in Oslo in 1929 and the French exam in 1933. He then studied art history at the university. During his studies he volunteered for a few years at the Norsk Folkemuseum and was on study trips to Europe. Roar Hauglid wrote treatises on ornamental motifs during his studies . This led to the fact that the imperial antiquarian Harry Fett became aware of his talent for the analysis of ornamentation early on and accepted him on his staff in 1936.

In 1937 Roar Hauglid completed his master's thesis on the ornamentation of the Setesdalens stave church portal ( Setesdalens stavkirkeportaler. En studie i portalornamentikkens historie ). In 1939 he was appointed antiquarian. In 1940 he married Goro Marie Bøhler (* 1914). She is the daughter of farmer Johannes Bøhler (1880–1964) and Marie Lynne (1881–1936). In 1946 Roar Hauglid was appointed first antiquarian (første antikvar). He took care of the collections of various local museums. In 1950 he finished his dissertation on acanthus in Norwegian wood carving . The doctoral thesis was published in three volumes. He was also the first antiquarian to be responsible for the 1954 exhibitions in Brussels and Paris over 1000 years of Norwegian folk art . For UNESCO he published an illustrated book with Louis Grodecki on Norwegian painting in stave churches. ( Norway. Paintings from the Stave Churches. Unesco World of Art Series. 1955 )

In 1958 Roar Hauglid became a realm antiquarian. He took care of the preservation of many Norwegian architectural monuments and did not shy away from confronting the authorities. Because of his tenacity, he was nicknamed "peaceful warrior". The Reichsantiquariat was expanded under his leadership. Despite his busy agenda, he published a lot of scientific papers. Between 1973 and 1976 he published his results in the Stave Church Research, which comprises over 1000 pages. In 1977 he retired. He died in Oslo on November 18, 2001.
