The company rlc | packaging group is a packaging solution company headquartered in Hanover . As a packaging manufacturer for sensitive, fast-moving consumer goods, the rlc group supplies customers in the cosmetics, confectionery, food and pharmaceutical industries in Europe. Folding boxes , package inserts and labels are produced in eight European plants .

history

On April 1st, 1861 Heinrich Christian Bestehorn founded the company HC Bestehorn in Aschersleben ; Initially, bags and pouches were produced.

From 1864 to 1911 HC Bestehorn invested in new technologies, including a high-speed letterpress press, an industrial envelope machine and an offset press from Frankenthaler in the first few years. During this time business relationships were established with branded goods manufacturers that are still known today, such as Bahlsen and Dr. Oetker .

In 1926, Bestehorn joined the Rob. Leunis & Chapman GmbH in Hanover, creating one of the largest packaging manufacturers.

For the 75th anniversary of the HCB in Aschersleben in 1936, paper and cardboard consumption was around 10,000 tons, there were 900 machines: 35 offset presses, 40 letterpress presses and the group employed 1,800 people. Around 600 million cigarette packs left the factory every year; Over a million sachets of baking and pudding powder were produced every day.

In the last months of the Second World War , Rob's Hanoverian location was opened in 1945. 90% of Leunis & Chapman destroyed by bombing and production could only be maintained due to the relocation to Aschersleben to HC Bestehorn. In the course of the restoration management, the HCB in Aschersleben was expropriated by the Soviet military administration. Investments in the Hanover location could only be realized with the support of customers.

In order to be on site with customers in Berlin, the group took over Stadler & Co. in 1968, and in 1990 Colorpack GmbH was founded in Berlin-Köpenick with the former association of consumer cooperatives of the GDR .

The topic of globalization had become increasingly important for customers in the course of the 1980s and 1990s; Concentration processes, alliances, mergers and collaborations make a global presence necessary for customers like Procter & Gamble (Gillette). That is why the Global Packaging Alliance (GPA) was founded in 1997, which enables globally uniform packaging that is produced locally.

In the course of business relationships with large pharmaceutical manufacturers and the need to adjust to the manufacture of pharmaceutical packaging, Pharmacenter GmbH was founded in 2003 for the production of pharmaceutical packaging and package inserts. At the Hanover location, the first flexo / offset combination was used as inline production in the folding box area. Production relocations of Western European and international customers to Eastern Europe resulted in the integration of BSC Drukarnia (Poland, Poznań) into the group in 2004. In 2007, the umbrella brand development took place in the rlc | packaging group takes place as the marketing umbrella of the corporate group. In order to support customers and their agencies in closing the gap between design and production options , the brandpack packaging design competence center was started, which has been an independent agency in Hamburg since January 1, 2015.

The eight production sites of rlc in Germany, Poland and Switzerland.

The traditional definition of customer orientation or constant readiness to deliver has become more and more difficult in the course of the last few decades or has led to massive overproduction and high waste rates , as more and more different products have tended to be placed in stores, but most of them flopped and had to be destroyed as a result. In order to take this development into account, the Lean Production System was introduced in 2008 with the support of Porsche Consulting. The former company premises of HC Bestehorn in Aschersleben was inaugurated in 2010 as "Bestehorn Park" and serves as an educational center with reform pedagogical approaches. At the Hanover location, a driverless transport system ( AGV ) was installed for the first time in a folding box company for the entire goods management and the production hall was expanded.

In the 150th anniversary year in 2011, Aug. Heinrigs Druck + Verpackung GmbH was taken over. This created the largest family-run packaging manufacturer in Germany. With the takeover of Limmatdruck Zeiler AG, the largest folding box manufacturer in Switzerland, rlc | developed packaging group became the sixth largest packaging manufacturer in Europe in July 2011. In 2012, the expansion work on the new pharmaceutical center in Rüdersdorf near Berlin was completed.

In December 2019 it was announced that the Swedish packaging specialist ÅR Packaging from Lund , behind which the financial investor CVC Capital Partners is, plans to take over RLC.
