Rob Dixon (* 20th century Atlanta ) is an American jazz saxophonist and music producer.

Life and work

Dixon learned the saxophone from the age of ten. After completing his Bachelor of Arts at Hampton University in Virginia , he continued studying at Indiana University with David Baker . After moving to New York City in 1996, he played with well-known jazz musicians such as Tony Bennett , Dakota Staton , the Ellington Band , Jonah Jones , Slide Hampton , Ray Charles , the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra and the Smithsonian Master Works Jazz Orchestra.

In the following years he worked in the Illinois Jacquet Big Band for over four years . Together with tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, he joined the Tana Reid quartet , led by drummer Akira Tana and the renowned bassist Rufus Reid .

Dixon returned to Indianapolis in 2003, where he worked with the Cleveland Heritage Jazz Orchestra and the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra . As a band leader, he has built up the funk-jazz combo Triology +1 and an organ-centered quartet with Melvin Rhyne . He earns his living as Vice-Chef at Owl Studios.

Dixon is under contract with Owl Studios , an Indianapolis-based jazz fusion record label of which he is vice president. There he released two albums as a band leader - What Things Could Be (2006) and Reinvention: The Dixon-Rhyne Project (2008). On Reinvention, the organist Melvin Rhyne is a co-leader and named.

He is also Director of Education (artistic director and young talent promoter) of the annual Indianapolis Festival Indy Jazz Fest . After the owners of Owl Studios bought the festival's naming rights from the American Pianists Association , who had run it since 2000, they reinvented it as a non-profit event. The new owners concentrated on involving the schools and high schools as well as jazz bands from the regional universities. The entrance fees have become more family-friendly, i.e. less expensive, and the location has also been relocated. Instead of around “father's day” in early summer, it was postponed to the third week of September because, according to Dixon, you then have a better chance of getting good artists.

Dixon also frequently works as a sideman with other musicians from Owl Studios, including Derrick Gardner & the Jazz Prophets, Cynthia Layne, Steve Allee, Mike Clark, and The Headhunters . According to his own statements on his blog at Owl Studios, Rob plays every first Wednesday of the month at the Indianapolis jazz club The Jazz Kitchen and is the presenter of the jazz jam session there every last Monday of the month. He also appears occasionally in the regional Chatterbox jazz clubs. One of his compositions (with Raeford Gerald) Bump 'N From The Middle is on the compilation Act 1 on the Southbound label with Ace Records (UK).

In October 2010 Dixon went as a member of the Mike Clark Trio on a tour sponsored by the Russian US Embassy with 17 concerts across Russia.

Rob Dixon should not be confused with the actor of the same name .
