Fight between Armenia and Azerbaijan

On the night of April 1 and 2, 2016, the Azerbaijani side launched violent attacks against the north-eastern defense line of Nagorno-Karabakh. After the use of artillery , infantry began to attack. Under the leadership of Captain Armenak Urfanyan, a small number of Armenian border guards put up strong resistance. After repelling two attacks and shooting down a tank, the Azerbaijani armed forces withdrew to their starting position and resumed the artillery attacks. Captain Urfanyan and the machine gunner Karam Sloyan were killed.

After the death of the commanding officer, Robert Abajyan continued the resistance. He had already suffered a leg injury at the time. After the line was broken, he took the wounded machine gunner Andranik Zohrabyan to the shelter 30 meters away. In the shelter, Abajyan informed the battalion commander of the military situation and impending dangers, as well as the commander of the units that were to come to the rescue. Andranik Zohrabyan bled to death. Abajyan continued the fight alone from the shelter against a superior force. In the end, he caught the attention of the advancing Azerbaijani soldiers, raised his hands and pretended to surrender. He secretly had an unlocked hand grenade with him. When the soldiers got closer, he blew himself up with the soldiers, killing ten or more Azerbaijani soldiers. His last radio message was: “Under no circumstances may this position be given up!”.

On April 8, there was a truce and the bodies of Abajyan and Zohrabyan were found in a search operation.
