Robert Clifton

Sir Robert Clifton of Clifton († 1478 ) was an English knight .

Life

Sir Robert was a son of Gervaise Clifton.

He served as Justice of Array in 1457 and 1459, and was appointed Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1451, 1460 and 1468 . During the Wars of the Roses , Sir Robert fought for the House of York in 1461 at the Battle of Towton and was beaten to Knight of the Bath on June 27, 1461, on the eve of Edward IV's coronation .

Sir Robert and his son, Gervaise, received royal permission in 1476 to build a college in the Trinity Chapel of St Mary's Church in Clifton .

Sir Robert Clifton died on April 9, 1478 and has his final resting place in St Mary's Church, Clifton, Nottinghamshire.

Marriage and offspring

Sir Robert was married to Alice, a daughter of Sir John Booth.
