Robert Coles
Martin Robert Coles (born October 12, 1929 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American child psychiatrist at Harvard University and award-winning non-fiction author.
Life
Coles earned a bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1950 and an MD from Columbia University in 1954 with a medical degree. He initially worked as a military doctor and in pediatrics , but soon turned to child psychiatry . Coles held a professorship in child psychiatry and medical humanities and one in social ethics at Harvard University.
Cole's encounter with the then eight-year-old Ruby Bridges had a strong influence on him and he began to deal with questions of responsibility and compassion or the social significance of dealing with art and literature. He dealt with the abolition of racial segregation in schools, the children of migrant workers and Sharecroppers and the effect of school busing (to make transporting children to distant schools to a de facto racial segregation of residential areas in the schools are not effective) . His five-volume Children of Crisis, on the development of children under various conditions, has won numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize . In addition, Coles dealt intensively with Flannery O'Connor and her work, which he put in relation to his own work. His course The Literature of Social Reflection , in which he analyzed works by James Agee , George Orwell , Walker Percy , William Carlos Williams and Raymond Carver , among others , was considered particularly influential. From 1995 he published the literary magazine Double Take .
Coles authored more than 60 monographs and more than 1200 journal articles.
