Robert Cox ( May 6, 1845 - June 2, 1899 ) was a British politician.

Life

Cox had a son of the same name. He owned a factory for gelatine and glue production in the Edinburgh district of Gorgie . Cox ran a private observatory in which he hired the astronomer William Peck . In 1877 he was accepted as a Fellow in the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland .

Political career

After the death of Liberal MP George Campbell in 1892, by-elections were required in his constituency of Kirkcaldy Burgh . This was the first time that Cox competed in national elections. However, the Liberal Unionist Cox was clearly defeated by his liberal adversary Henry Dalziel and missed entry into the British House of Commons .

In the general election in 1895 , Cox ran for the Liberal Unionists for the constituency of Edinburgh South . He inherited his party colleague Lewis McIver , who narrowly missed the majority of votes in the previous elections. Cox's opponent was the liberal Herbert Woodfield Paul , who had held the mandate since 1892. Cox prevailed with a difference of only 97 votes against Paul and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. Cox died in 1899 before the end of the term. The due by-elections in the constituency of Edinburgh South were won by the liberal Arthur Dewar .
