Robert Curzon, 14th Baron Zouche (born March 16, 1810 in London - † August 2, 1873 ) was a respected British traveler of the Victorian Age , travel writer, diplomat and book collector, who was mainly active in the Middle East . He is perhaps best known for having the "acquisition" of some of the most important early Bible - manuscripts from monasteries of the Eastern Orthodox Church is responsible.

Life

Curzon was the son of the Hon. Robert Curzon, the younger son of Assheton Curzon, 1st Viscount Curzon, and his wife Harriet Curzon, 13th Baroness Zouche. He was educated at Charterhouse College and Christ Church College , Oxford University .

Between 1834 and 1837, Curzon traveled to Egypt, Syria, Albania and the Athos peninsula in search of ancient manuscripts. In his book Visits to Monasteries in the Levant [1849] he described and justified his ventures. He visited Mount Athos in 1837 and in the monastery of Agiou Pavlou , he said, the abbot said to him: "We do not use the old books and we would be glad if you would accept one", whereupon he took two, including of the illuminated Bulgarian Tetraevangeliary by Tsar Ivan Alexander from the 14th century, which is now in the British Library .

In 1870, Curzon inherited the title of Baron Zouche from his mother . He died in August 1873 at the age of 63 and his title passed to his son Robert . He also had a daughter, Darea (1860–1917), who inherited the barony after her brother's death.
