Robert Debes

Robert Debes (born June 21, 1878 in Elberfeld ; † March 9, 1962 in St. Gallen ) was a German-Swiss economist and professor of business administration at the St. Gallen University of Commerce .

Life

Debes worked in the banking sector for seven years, both in an Italian and a German bank, before he began studying at the Cologne Commercial College , which he left two years later, in 1906, as a qualified commercial teacher . His achievements during his studies were so convincing that in 1906 he received a call to the commercial college in St. Gallen, which he followed. He continued his studies at the University of Zurich and received his doctorate there in 1908 with a thesis on the Banque de Commerce de Genéve 1845-1907 . From 1921 to 1938 he was rector of the University of St. Gallen and was able to obtain the right to award doctorates and thus full recognition as a university. In 1949 he retired .
