Robert F. Hammerstiel (* 1957 in Pottschach ) is an Austrian artist .

From 1979 to 1983 Robert F. Hammerstiel studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna .

His work includes photographic series and groups of works as well as video works and room installations . In his conceptually developed works, Hammerstiel deals with the representation mechanisms of reality and its external manifestations as well as with people's longing for idyll and their marketing. Hammerstiel's starting point is the often futile search of people for happiness and security, which leads them to the creation of substitute worlds - surrogates that are often thought out and pre-produced by the consumer industry.

In the 1980s, small-format black and white photographic series of beach landscapes and abandoned gas stations were created. Since the three-part photography series Der Stand der Dinge (1988–1991), which deals with the individual design of private and public spaces, Hammerstiel has been taking photographs in color in order to increase the degree of reality; With Inside Out (1992–1993), large-format photographic works are created for the first time. Increasingly, mass-produced goods that first awaken needs and, paradoxically, promise individual satisfaction, but at the same time destroy longings, are the subject of Hammerstiel's groups of works:

  • Make it up (1993–1997)
  • Glücksfutter (1998-2001)
  • Oases (1998-2002)
  • Forget Mozart (2005-2006)
  • Everything is fine (2003-2009)
