Robert Forster (born June 29, 1957 in Brisbane ) is an Australian guitarist , singer and songwriter . He became known as a member of the Go-Betweens .

Life

In 1977 he met Grant McLennan , after a few months of rehearsal the duo recorded their first single. In 1982 the Go-Betweens released their first album, Send Me a Lullaby , in which Forster was still responsible for the vocals. McLennan and Forster took turns on the later albums.

Highly praised by the critics, the band never made their big break. After the essentially acoustic album 16 Lovers Lane (1989), McLennan and Forster dissolved the Go-Betweens by mutual agreement, but without first consulting drummer Lindy Morrison and multi-instrumentalist Amanda Brown .

In the following years Forster released four solo albums. In 1999 the Beggars Banquet label released a compilation of the go-betweens' best songs. To promote this, Forster and McLennan went on a worldwide tour with an acoustic program. In the following year (2000) Forster and McLennan reanimated the Go-Betweens and released another three albums together, which were more commercially successful than the recordings from the 80s. The highlight of the success was the award of the Australian ARIA Award for the best rock album ( Oceans Apart ).

Robert Forster announced shortly after the unexpected death of Grant McLennan in May 2006 that this was the definitive end of the go-betweens. In 2008 his album The Evangelist was released , which contains, among other things, three songs in which McLennan was still involved, including Demon Days, their last song together.

2016 published Robert Forster his memoirs under the title Grant & I . published by Penguin Books . The book tells the story of the Go-Betweens and especially of the two protagonists Forster and McLennan. The German translation was published in October 2017 under the title Grant & Ich . In autumn 2017 Forster was on tour with reading from his book and music.
