Robert Gies

Robert Gies Hilden

Robert Gies (born April 7, 1904 in Hilden ; † April 29, 1980 ) was a German politician and member of the state parliament ( SPD ).

Life and work

After attending elementary school , he worked as a worker and commercial clerk and continued his education at the Distance School in Berlin. From 1947 Gies was Arbeits- u. Social Director of Kronprinz AG , where he worked for a total of 40 years.

From 1919 to 1925 he was a member of the Free Socialist Youth . In 1925 he joined the Communist Party of Germany and in 1928 switched to the SPD. He was active in numerous party bodies and had been a union member since 1919.

Political life

In the election to the Hilden city parliament on March 12, 1933, he was number 1 (of 15 candidates) on the list of the SPD and was elected as the only representative. He renounced the mandate of the city council on March 24, 1933 "for health reasons". From August 18 to August 31, 1944, he was imprisoned in connection with the events of July 20, 1944.

On September 29, 1945 he became chairman of the newly founded Hilden local association of the SPD. From 1946 to 1970 he was a member of the district council of the Düsseldorf-Mettmann district .

From 1952 to 1969 he was mayor of Hilden .

Political events during this term of office:

  • Cooperation with the British occupation soldiers in the forest barracks
  • Establishment of the municipal boys' secondary school from 1955 (from 1960 Wilhelm Fabry secondary school)
  • Sponsorship of the city through the former district of Wohlau in Silesia (1957)
  • Creation of living space and a. for refugees in the north and south of the city through the Neue Heimat (from 1957)
  • Conversion of the tram to bus operation (1961/1962)
  • Development of the school center at Holterhöfchen (from 1961)
  • Construction of new cemeteries in the south and north of the city (1966, 1968)
  • Establishment of the State Institute for Public Administration at the Kolksbruch (1968)
  • Establishment of twinning with Warrington in the English county of Cheshire . The partnership document was signed on May 22, 1968
  • Construction of the first indoor swimming pool in Hilden (1968)

From 1966 to 1970 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia and worked in the working committee and justice committee. In 1971 he became a member of the Commission for Local Reorganization . On July 8, 1970, he resigned from the SPD parliamentary group chairmanship for health reasons.

  • March 1, 1979 The AWO Hilden residential complex on Clarenbachweg was named Robert-Gies-Haus
  • In 1987 a new street between Klotzstrasse and Schulstrasse was named after Robert Gies
