Robert Jean Julien Planquette (born March 31, 1848 in Paris , † January 28, 1903 ibid) was a French composer of everyday music , especially operettas .

Little is known about his childhood and youth; in addition to the date of birth listed above, July 31, 1850 is occasionally mentioned. After attending the Paris Conservatory, he earned his living by making piano reductions, which were popular operettas at the time. He also composed. After the war of 1870/1871 he began composing small one-act operettas that were performed in concert cafés. Encouraged by the success that followed, he created almost 20 full-length works. In addition to Rip-Rip, his best-known operettas include The Bells of Corneville, premiered in 1877, and the song Le régiment de Sambre et Meuse , which Joseph Rauski later arranged for the military march. His contemporaries describe Planquette's works, which are seldom played today, as delicate, graceful, graceful and cheerful, as well as of good quality craftsmanship.
