Robert Käppeli

Robert Käppeli (born July 21, 1900 in Lucerne , citizen of Lucerne and Knutwil ; † April 25, 2000 ibid), was a Swiss manager.

Life

Robert Käppeli completed a commercial apprenticeship. From 1924 he studied economics at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1928. He then became an assistant at the Institute for World Economy and Maritime Transport in Kiel . He started his career in 1930 as a secretary at Warburg Bank in Hamburg. After his return to Switzerland in 1934 he became secretary of the board of the chemical company Ciba AG in Basel. For him, this position marked the beginning of an extraordinary career at Ciba. After he became head of the finance department in 1939, he became delegate of the board of directors from 1946 and thus operational manager. In 1943, he helped Edgar Gretener's school friend, the Dr. Edgar Gretener AG in Zurich, which was renamed Gretag AG in 1958 after Gretener's death and was taken over by Ciba AG. There the Eidophor projection system was fully developed and commercialized. Käppeli climbed the top step in 1956 as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ciba. In this role he later negotiated the merger with the rival company JR Geigy AG . The merger to form Ciba-Geigy AG came about in 1970. From 1970 to 1972 he chaired the newly founded Ciba-Geigy AG.
