Robert Münzel (born September 12, 1859 in Wiesbaden , † July 11, 1917 in Hamburg ) was a German classical philologist and librarian .

Robert Münzel graduated from high school in his native Wiesbaden. From 1878 to 1883 he studied classical philology and history at the University of Bonn . After receiving his doctorate in 1883, he passed the teaching examination a year later and initially worked as a volunteer, and from 1885 as an assistant at Bonn University. From 1888 he worked for the Royal University in Berlin and in 1891 was appointed deputy director of the University Library in Marburg . In 1900 he went back to Berlin, where he was appointed deputy director of the Berlin University Library .

In 1902, Münzel moved to the Hamburg City Library , particularly on the initiative of Werner von Melles . Here he worked as director until the end of his life in 1917. As he was extremely good at organizing, he made many changes in the library and did the preparatory work for the conversion of the library into a university library. Münzel improved the library catalogs, set new thematic priorities with the Hamburgensien , started the papyrus collection and curated exhibitions that received a lot of attention. Münzel was highly regarded in culture and science. He participated in numerous committees and circles and in 1908 played a decisive role in founding the Society of Book Friends in Hamburg .

During the First World War , Münzel served as a captain in the Landwehr.

Robert Münzel found his final resting place in the Hamburg cemetery Ohlsdorf , Planquadrat AG 25 (northeast of Chapel 7).
