Robert M. Koerner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert M. Koerner (born December 2, 1933 in Philadelphia - † December 1, 2019 ) was an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Career

Koerner studied civil engineering at the Drexel Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1956 and a master's degree in 1963, worked as a geotechnical engineer in various construction companies from 1956, taught part-time at various universities from the mid-1960s, studied law at Temple University from 1963 to 1965 and received her PhD in soil mechanics from Duke University in 1968 . He was then Assistant Professor and from 1976 Professor at Drexel University (most recently HL Bowman Professor of Civil Engineering). Most recently he was Professor Emeritus there.

Koerner is one of the pioneers in the USA in the use of geosynthetics in geotechnical engineering, with which he has mainly been concerned since the late 1970s. He also dealt with methods such as locating toxic waste containers underground.

He was the founder of the Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI) in Philadelphia in 1986 and of the Geosynthetic Institute (GSI) in 1991. He was Civil Engineer of the Year in Philadelphia in 1989 and Engineer of the Year at Drexel University College of Engineering in 1996. In 1996 he was Terzaghi Lecturer ( Emerging and future developments of selected geosynthetic applications ) and in 1999 he gave the Terzaghi Lecture at the University of Vienna. In 2000 he was a co-recipient of the James Croes Medal of the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), whose Philadelphia section he headed in 1975/76. He has been an honorary member of the International Geosynthetics Society since 2008 and he is an honorary member of the ASCE. He received the Alan Haliburton Award and is a Fellow of the ASTM and received its Award of Merit.

He had been married since 1959 and had three children.
