Robert McCoy (pianist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Jesse McCoy (born March 31, 1910 in Aliceville (Alabama) , † February 12, 1978 in Birmingham , Alabama ) was an American pianist and singer of the blues and barrelhouse piano .

Robert McCoy grew up in Birmingham, where he lived all his life. The first recordings were made in the 1930s with Bogan's Birmingham Busters for Vocalion in 1937 . During this time he worked with Jaybird Coleman , Guitar Slim , James Sherell (aka Peanut The Kidnapper ). He continued his career in the 1940s and 50s, but without the opportunity to record. Professional recordings were not made again until the early 1960s, when the young Patrick Cather got him to record for him in 1961. This is how the LP Barrel House Blues and Jook Piano was created in 1962 , which was released on Cather's Vulcan label . In 1963, Cather produced a second McCoys album, Blues and Boogie Classics .

The pianist should not be confused with the blues musician Robert Lee McCoy, who became known under the pseudonym Robert Nighthawk .
