Aliceville is a city ( English city ) in Pickens County , Alabama , United States. Aliceville had 2,486 residents in 2010. In 2000, 81 more residents were registered. This corresponds to a population decrease of 3.2 percent. The total area of the place is 11.7 km². Camp Aliceville was located here during World War II . Today there is a women's prison around 4 km north of Aliceville .
Geography and climate
Aliceville is located in western Alabama in the southern United States, about 12 kilometers east of the Mississippi border .

Demographic statistics
At the 2010 census , Aliceville had 2,486 residents, spread across 1,012 households and 630 families. 74.9% of the population were African American and 22.6% were white. Children under the age of 18 lived in 22.8% of households. The median income was $ 21,754 per household, with 44.6% of the population living below the poverty line .
history
The city was founded by John Taylor Cochrane . He named her after his wife, Alyce Searcy Cochrane .
During the Second World War , the POW camp at Camp Aliceville was located in Aliceville. About 6,000 German prisoners of war lived in it. Most had been captured in Africa and had served in the Afrika Korps . The camp was operated between June 2, 1943 and September 1945. The prisoners had been transported to Aliceville on the St. Louis - San Francisco Railway .
In 2013 a women's prison was opened. It has 1433 inmates. The prison was slightly damaged by a tornado in February 2016 .

Alabama State Route 17 runs from west to east of the city, and Alabama State Route 14 runs from north to south . About 28 kilometers to the northeast there is a connection to US Highway 80 , about 35 kilometers southeast to US Highway 43 and Interstates 20 and 59 , which run on the same route here in parts.
About one kilometer west of the city is George Downer Airport , where around 5,400 aircraft movements are made every year.
