Life

As the son of a school teacher, he studied at the University of Rostock from 1553 and moved to the University of Wittenberg in 1558 . There he attended lectures by Philipp Melanchthon, among other things, and on February 16, 1559 acquired the academic degree of master's degree at the philosophical faculty. After completing his studies, he returned to his hometown and established a school there that gained a good reputation in a few years.

In 1563 he followed a recommendation as director to the pedagogy in Heidelberg, where he himself taught dialectics, rhetoric and the Greek language. Soon afterwards he was appointed professor for poetry and eloquence at the University of Heidelberg and was a teacher at the College of Sapienz. Since Ludwig VI. In church politics he switched from the Reformed to the Lutheran faith , Helm followed his colleagues at the Collegium Casimirianum in Neustadt an der Haardt .

After the death of Louis VI. the Reformed Creed was reintroduced at the Heidelberg Academy. Helm then returned and held the chair as professor of classical languages until his death. Helm had earned a good reputation as a celebrated philologist and poet. His writings are written exclusively in Latin. He also edited the commentaries by Zacharias Ursinus .

He was publicly active in academic speeches and in representative poetry composed according to the occasion. Even with members of the Palatinate dynasty, the culturally conscious and didactic basic trait of his poetry was often expressed. In addition to older contacts, the learned friendships with the teachers, clergy and professors of Heidelberg late humanism, such as Johannes Posthius , came to the fore.

His daughter Sarah married Pastor Johannes Adam on February 16, 1591 .
