Robert Peroni (* 1944 in Klobenstein , South Tyrol ) is a former extreme athlete , mountaineer and ski instructor .

Life

Peroni studied medicine , psychology and archeology . The leader of various international expeditions such as B. the Svalbard expedition, the High Hindu Kush expedition and a solo expedition through the Naomid Desert (southern Afghanistan) became internationally known for the first crossing of the Greenland ice sheet at its widest point. He undertook this north transversal in 1983 together with the South Tyroleans Pepi Schrott and Wolfgang Thomaseth. The expedition in 88 days is also the subject of his book "The White Horizon". The 1400 km long, life-threatening crossing of Greenland was carried out without aids or supply depots.

In his second book “The Magical Frontier. Expedition into Greenland's Eternal Night ”describes Robert Peroni how, five years later, he and his South Tyrolean mountaineer Bartl Waldner carried out an expedition into the eternal night of the arctic winter.

The Swiss filmmaker Humbi Entress made a film in 2010 about Peroni's last expedition to the Greenland Ice Sheet and wrote: "In Greenland he [Peroni] found peace with himself and the original Inuit thinking that was not focused on success."

Today Peroni lives mainly in Tasiilaq , the capital of East Greenland. There he has been running the hotel “The Red House” since the 1990s, where he only employs locals. With his hotel, he pursues the goals of creating environmentally friendly tourism on the one hand and preserving the Inuit culture on the other by giving the young locals work and thus a perspective on life and the future. He has detailed life in Greenland in his third book “Cold, Wind and Freedom. How the Inuit taught me the meaning of life ”, published in fall 2014.
