Yesterday we were strangers is a German TV film by Matthias Tiefenbacher from 2012.
action
Sophie Ferber is a somewhat stressed job, but nevertheless carefree and determined young civil engineer . However, she is less successful privately. The relationship with her father Karl is strained because she could never please him from childhood. For his birthday she gives him a trip to Venice , but this gift doesn't go down well with him and so she leaves the party frustrated. Afterwards she talks to her mother Beate about her father, whom she calls an idiot.
A stranger, whom she meets several times that day and who then turns out to be more than just her new neighbor Max, accidentally knocks on her door and the two have, as they believe, a one-night stand . Sophie doesn't want any relationship at the moment. The pendulum between personal closeness and distance to various people swings in different directions through many other everyday, but not unproblematic incidents.
When Sophie has a visit from her mother and she introduces her boyfriend Max, who is just coming in, the mother runs away in horror and tries to call her husband on the way to her car. When her cell phone falls down in the hustle and bustle, she throws it away before she has told her husband the reason for the call. Shortly afterwards she comes off the road with the car and dies of the consequences of the accident without having regained consciousness.
When Sophie is with Max a short time later in his summer house and her father comes to visit, he too freezes when she introduces him to Max. With an effort she can persuade him to answer her question about the reason. So she learns that Max is her half-brother because her mother had an affair with his father shortly before her parents' wedding. While for Max's sister Julia little changes in her relationship to Sophie and she takes the situation with humor, Sophie and Max have to learn to transform their love affair into a relationship between siblings.
