Robert Schaback

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Schaback (* 1945 in Einbeck ) is a German mathematician who deals with numerical mathematics and is professor at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .

After graduating from high school in Gütersloh, Schaback studied mathematics from 1964 at the University of Münster with a diploma in 1968 and a doctorate in numerical mathematics under Helmut Werner in 1969 (dissertation: special rational spline functions ). He completed his habilitation in 1973 and became a professor at the University of Göttingen in 1976.

He deals with interpolation and approximation , among other things with gridless methods of approximation of functions (method of radial basis functions , RBF). He and Holger Wendland wrote a widespread numerical mathematics textbook.

Schaback is a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

His doctoral students include Holger Wendland (professor in Bayreuth), Armin Iske (professor in Hamburg), Zongmin Wu (professor at Fudan University Shanghai) and Ludwig Cromme (professor in Cottbus).

He has been married to Gudrun Schaback-Pollert since 1969 and has two children. His son Alexander Schaback (* 1975) was opera director at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe until 2014, his son Johannes Georg Schaback (* 1982) is the founder of the online shop LadenZeile.
