Robert Smythson
Robert Smythson (* around 1536 ; † 1614 in Wollaton ) was an English builder and is considered the most important representative of Elizabethan architecture .
Life
Little is known about the life of Smythson. He was the chief builder of Longleat House (1567–80) and later lived in Wollaton. Smythson left many plans and drawings, according to which several houses in Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire are ascribed to him. His most important work was Wollaton Hall (1580–88). He followed a modified Renaissance style inspired by Sebastiano Serlio . His designs are characterized by the emphasis on numerous large windows, by their symmetry and delicacy.
