The former Robert Straub GmbH Autovermietung, founded in 1954 and based in Biberach an der Riss , has been operating as Budget Autovermietung since September 16, 2007 and most recently employed around 650 people. Robert Straub, who took over the company at the age of 21, and Andreas Oppitz acted as managing directors . After filing for bankruptcy on May 5, 2009, Robert Straub GmbH ceased operations on August 31, 2009 as the fifth largest car rental company in Germany at the time.

By August 1, 2007, Robert Straub GmbH had entered into a partnership with Vanguard Autovermietung GmbH & Co. KG , the third largest car rental company in the world. With Vanguard Autovermietung as a license partner, the two sister brands National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car were added as additional lines of business for corporate customers and holidaymakers.

In 2005 Robert Straub reached the finals of the Entrepreneur of the Year competition . A total of 350 nominations were received by the auditing company Ernst & Young , 80 companies made it to the final round as "owner-managed, medium-sized companies that are characterized by strong growth and innovative spirit" after detailed questioning and evaluation .

The German vehicle fleet last comprised around 5,600 passenger vehicles and around 1,000 trucks.

Budget Autovermietung Robert Straub GmbH had to file for bankruptcy on May 5, 2009. The business was initially continued by the insolvency administrator Arndt Geiwitz. The operating business of the car rental company was finally stopped on August 31, 2009. Most recently there were around 650 employees at the headquarters in Biberach an der Riss and in over 100 stations.
