Roberto Bompiani ( February 12, 1821 in Rome ; † January 20, 1908 there ) was an Italian genre painter as well as a sculptor and art teacher.

Life

Bompiani studied from the age of 15 at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome . During his studies he was awarded several prizes.

Roberto Bompiani married and became the father of Clelia (1848–1927) and Augusto (1852–1930), who were also painters.

At the London Industrial Exhibition in 1851 he received a medal for studying mosaic with the portrait of Pope Boniface II , which Giovanni Ubizi had executed in the mosaic. In 1851 he took part in the Clementino-Pellegrini Competition and received second prize behind Casimiro Brugnone De Rossi (1818–1876). He was appointed commissioner of the papal government at the London World's Fair in 1862 .

In 1864 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca. He was appointed Vice President and then President of the Accademia di San Luca. In particular, in 1896, despite his resignation, he was confirmed as President of the Academy of San Luca with a unanimous vote of the General Assembly. He was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government .

In 1896 he exhibited a painting at the Berlin trade fair .

He was a member of the art academies of Florence , Perugia and Urbino , the Institut de France and the Pontifical Academy of Fine Arts and Literature, and commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy . He held high offices under the papal government, which appointed him an expert in exporting works of art. He was a member of the Municipal Archaeological Commission of Rome.

Bompiani died in 1908 and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery.
